About

Intra-ecclesial apologetics is a discipline with one job: to argue for the church God intended, to the church itself.

The name

Intra-ecclesial: within the church. Apologetics: the making of a reasoned case. Classical apologetics defends the faith to the world. This discipline turns the same tools inward and makes a case to believers for the form of church the New Testament describes: the design, its fit with human nature, the points at which the modern arrangement departs from it, and the way back.

The standards

Every empirical claim on this site is graded: demonstrates, supports, suggests, or contested. Findings that have not survived replication are named and excluded rather than quietly used. Every historical stage is given two columns: what it solved and what it cost. And every argument is expected to name its own weakest joint, because an argument that hides where it is exposed is not airtight; it is untested.

The rules

  • The diagnosis must explain the sincere. Any account that requires pastors to be hypocrites and members to be fools has failed as an explanation.
  • Systems before villains. Remove the man and keep the structure, and the structure produces the next man.
  • Teach before touch. There is no instrument in the New Testament for compelling the will.
  • The prophet grieves; the cynic gloats. Nothing here is a reason to leave.

The programme

Common questions are answered on the FAQ page. The site draws on a three-course, thirty-six-lecture programme. The articles are free; the courses are taught in cohorts. See the course map and get in touch about the next cohort.
